시조-주문(呪文) 1: 시조로 한옥 짜기
조선 시대 시조를 읽고, 그것을 주문으로 바꾸고, 한옥을 짜 봅시다.
*2025년 12월, 이화여대 국제동계대학 건축 수업 중 진행한 워크숍 내용입니다.
1단계: 한옥 101
한옥에 대해 전혀 모르는 다양한 전공의 외국 학부생들이 한옥의 구성 요소와 종류에 대해 공부하는 시간을 가졌습니다. 채, 마당, 기와, 대청마루, 온돌, 처마 등 한옥의 기본적인 건축 요소, 그리고 풍수의 기초를 배웠습니다.
3단계: 시조를 주문으로 다시쓰기
각자가 고른 시조를 일종의 주문(呪文; incantation)으로 다시 쓰는 시간을 가졌습니다. 학생들은 AI를 사용하지 않고 종이에 손으로 직접 쓰는 방식으로 자신이 상상하는 한옥에 대해 천천히 구체화했습니다(생각보다 매우 진지하게 임해 ‘주문’의 느낌보다는 각자가 시조로부터 정말 구현해보고 싶은 집의 느낌이 두드러졌습니다). 기와집, 너와집, 초가집 등 1단계에서 배운 다양한 한옥의 형태를 선택했습니다.
A Hanok that is a standalone from a village nearby. There are a total of 4 different chae, all of which will be modernised after the first chae with a madang with a tree in the middle.
The first chae, which is used for personal, will be a traditional chae – Neowajip rooftiles and traditional oars for the rafters and beam. The windows will be small and the doors made from traditional hooks and paper.
The following chaes will be built around the madang using giwajip rooftiles and wooden beams instead. Each room will serve its own purpose – the 2nd room for guests, the 3rd room for kids and the last room for a madang.
The windows will be wide open to let the scenery in, and electric heating is incorporated into the new chaes. Everywhere, excluding the first chae, will be plants made for different seasons.
(Location) A complex system of korean neowajip that rest near the top of a mountain (to demonstrate the rocky trials of relationships)
(Season) Autum, where days are colder and people starting to realise that the year is ending soon
(People) Designed specifically for people that needs peace and time to reflect on their relationship
(Layout) There are multiple entryways and exits all throughout the space (making some paths chosen to be confusing or easy depending on your choices + reflects Yi myonghan frustration with love)
Interior spaces are a juxtaposition of old and new features
Giwa roofs are messy and disorganised from the entrance but as you venture closer to the yard the tiles become neater (symbolises the moment of clarity after some time)
High beam and rafters
A secluded Korean Hanok designed for family and self-cultivation. The first chae will be mainly for all the family, will be a large gathering for dinner celebretion for the kids and all to gather will be a vibrant place due to the summer rays.
The seocond chae will be mainly for living where we will sleep will be a smaller structure with small windows being warm and comfortoble to be able to relax and live
2단계: 시조 읽기
정철의 「성산별곡」(星山別曲), 윤선도의 「오우가」(五友歌)와 「어부사시사」(魚父四時詞) , 황진이의 「청산리 벽계수야」 등 다양한 고전 시조를 함께 읽었습니다. 이후 각자 한옥으로 변환해보고 싶은 시조를 하나씩 선택하고, 그 작품을 고른 이유에 관해 대화를 나누었습니다.
4단계: 주문으로 한옥 풍경 생성하기
완성된 주문을 프롬프트로 사용하여 ChatGPT 이미지 생성 기능으로 한옥 이미지를 만들었습니다. 학생들은 이미지에서 의도와 다르게 표현되는 부분을 조율하며 자신이 상상한 한옥에 좀 더 다가가는 시간을 가졌습니다.
5단계: 한옥 모델 만들기
앞서 생성한 한옥 이미지에 입체감을 더하고자 다양한 건축 모델의 형태로 변환했습니다. 실물 모형을 만드는 것도 재미있겠지만, 시간 상 이미지 생성 작업으로 완성했습니다. 학생들이 한옥을 조금 더 잘 알게 되었다고 이야기해주어 보람을 느꼈습니다.

저도 테스트로 한번 짜 보았습니다.

정몽주의 「단심가」(丹心歌)를 바탕으로 짰더니 이렇게나 곧은 구조의 한옥이 되었습니다. 게다가 종묘에서나 볼 수 있는 혼길이 마당에 떡하니 나 있어, 과연 산 자가 출입할 수 있는 가옥인가 싶습니다.
무시하고 자하 하디드(Zaha Hadid) 스타일로 바꾸어 달라고 요청했습니다. 창문이든 지붕이든 비틀면 너무나 쉽게 하디드가 됩니다. 테스트용 퓨전 한옥 디자인으로 만족스럽습니다.
좀 더 여유롭게 「성산별곡」(星山別曲)으로 새로 짰습니다. 마루에 앉아, 투명한 차를 즐겼습니다.
